Best Ways to See the Ottawa River: A Local Guide

The Ottawa River runs right past Parliament Hill, so you don’t have to go far to get on it, beside it or above it. Here are the best ways to see the river, from a floating tiki bar to a balanced-rock sculpture garden, with plain answers to the questions visitors ask most.

What is the best way to see the Ottawa River?

From the water. On land you get glimpses between buildings and trees. On the river you get Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal locks, the Canadian Museum of History and the Gatineau shoreline all in one view. If you only have one afternoon or evening, a boat cruise shows you the most in the least time.

    1. Cruise it on a floating tiki bar

A Palapa Tours cruise is 90 minutes on a Hawaiian-style floating tiki bar, with a licensed captain, a first mate behind the bar and room for up to 12 guests. You can buy individual seats on a public cruise or book the whole boat as a private charter for a birthday, a bachelorette, a team outing or a date night.

    • Where it leaves from: you choose your dock when you book. The two main docks are the Ottawa Locks, beside Parliament, and the Canadian Museum of History docks in Gatineau.
    • What you’ll see: Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal locks, the Alexandra Bridge, the Museum of History and the Gatineau shoreline.
    • Good to know: on public cruises we may pick up at both docks, which can add up to 15 minutes, but you always get your full 90 minutes on the water. Private charters leave at the exact time you booked.

    2. Watch boats climb the Rideau Canal locks

Right beside Parliament Hill, a flight of eight locks lifts boats from the Ottawa River up into the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lock staff still open and close the gates by hand. Grab a spot on the stone walls and watch a boat work its way up. The canal’s boating season runs from mid-May to mid-October, and the Ottawa Locks are also one of the two main Palapa docks.

    3. Paddle it yourself

The river has calm, sheltered spots that are good for kayaks and stand-up paddleboards:

    • Downtown, near the NCC River House, with kayak and paddleboard rentals and views of Parliament from water level.
    • Westboro Beach and Britannia Beach in the west end, both with board rentals in summer.
    • Petrie Island in Orléans, with sandy beaches and quiet bays.

Wear a life jacket, check the wind before you go, and stay clear of the shipping and tour-boat lanes near the locks.

    4. Walk or bike the riverside pathways

Paved pathways follow both shores. On the Ottawa side, the Capital Pathway runs west along the river from downtown. About four kilometres from Parliament you reach Remic Rapids, where artist John Felice Ceprano has been balancing rock sculptures on the riverbank since 1986. On the Gatineau side, the Voyageurs Pathway gives you the classic view back across the water to Parliament Hill.

    5. Ride the amphibious bus

Yes, there is a bus that drives into the river. The Lady Dive amphibus tours downtown by road and then rolls down a ramp and floats on the Ottawa River. It’s a fun one with kids, and if you’re out on a Palapa you may see it splash in.

    6. Take in the view from above

    • Major’s Hill Park sits on the bluff beside the Château Laurier, with views over the locks, the river and the Museum of History.
    • The Alexandra Bridge boardwalk lets you walk between Ottawa and Gatineau with the river under your feet. The bridge is at the end of its service life and is slated to be replaced, so enjoy the walk while you can.

    7. Stay for the fireworks

Every summer, Les Grands Feux du Casino Lac-Leamy lights up the sky on Wednesday and Saturday nights from late July to mid-August. People line both riverbanks to watch, but the best seat is on the water. Palapa runs special fireworks cruises on those nights. Book early for those dates.

    8. Go further upriver for whitewater

West of the city, the Ottawa River has some of the best-known whitewater rafting in Canada. Several outfitters run guided day trips from spring to fall, so you can pair a calm downtown cruise with a much wilder ride.

When is the best time to be on the river?

Ottawa’s boating season runs from May to October. For photos, aim for golden hour, the hour before sunset, when Parliament glows and the water turns gold. Evening cruises catch the sunset and the city lights coming on. July and August are the warmest and busiest; September is quieter, and the evenings are still mild.

    Quick answers

How long is a Palapa cruise? 90 minutes.

How many people fit on a boat? Up to 12 guests per boat.

Where do Palapa cruises leave from? You choose when you book. The two main docks are the Ottawa Locks and the Canadian Museum of History docks.

Is there a bar on board? Yes, a licensed bar, with your first mate as bartender.

What should I bring? Sunglasses, sunscreen and a layer for the evening, since it gets cooler on the water.

Ready to see the river the fun way? Book your Palapa cruise and we’ll see you on the water.

  • St-Albert Cheese Co-operative

    St-Albert Cheese Co-operative

    A 130-Year-Old Canadian Cheese Icon 🧀🇨🇦

If you’re a cheese lover (or just a fan of poutine—which, let’s be honest, who isn’t?), then you’ve probably heard of St-Albert Cheese Co-operative. This Franco-Ontarian cheesemaker has been crafting award-winning cheddar and cheese curds since 1894, making it one of Canada’s oldest co-operatives.

At Palapa Tours, we fully support the cheese economy—we haven’t implemented the Cheese Tax yet, but it’s something we’re thinking about. 🤔🧀

A Cheese Legacy Over 130 Years in the Making

St-Albert Cheese isn’t just any cheesemaker—it’s a company built on tradition, resilience, and community pride. Since its founding by a group of Franco-Ontarian dairy farmers, the co-op has been producing top-tier cheese while staying true to its roots.

✅ Cooperative-Owned: About 35 member farms (around 80 individuals) own and operate the business.
🏆 Award-Winning: Their cheese has won multiple Grand Champion awards at the British Empire Cheese Show.
🛫 Global Reach: They export cheese curds to all 10 Canadian provinces, three territories, and international destinations like Japan, Barbados, and Abu Dhabi.

    Poutine Royalty 👑🧀🍟

Let’s talk about what really makes St-Albert a Canadian treasure—poutine. Their famous cheese curds are a key ingredient in Canada’s national dish, and their reputation has spread so far that Canadian embassies worldwide order from them for Canada Day celebrations!

📦 Embassies across the globe stock up on St-Albert curds every year to celebrate with authentic poutine.
💡 As their Business Development Director, Éric Léveillé, puts it:
“To make poutine for Canada Day, embassies reach out to us each year… They pay for it, we bring it to the airport, and then they fly it in.”

A Major Employer & Community Staple

Not only does St-Albert make some of the best cheese in Canada, but it’s also a pillar of the local economy.

👨🏭 Employs over 220 people in the St-Albert region.
🏗️ Rebuilt after a devastating 2013 fire, which destroyed the original plant but led to a bigger, better, and more modern facility.
🏡 A source of pride for the St-Albert community, as Léveillé puts it:
“When it comes to cheese curds, we’re pretty big.”

Cheese Tourism: A Gouda Experience 🏡🧀

Did you know you can visit St-Albert Cheese Co-op? Their facility is open for cheese lovers to watch the cheese-making process, shop at their boutique, and enjoy a meal at their restaurant.

🍽️ Cheese Boutique & Restaurant – Try fresh cheese curds, gooey grilled cheese, and poutine that’ll change your life.
🎥 Behind-the-Scenes Cheese-Making – Learn how cheese goes from milk to masterpiece (as Ottawa Tourism puts it, “After your visit, cheese will no longer hold any secrets.”).

A Company That Overcame the Fire & Bounced Back Stronger

In 2013, disaster struck when a massive fire destroyed the St-Albert cheese factory and its historical archives. The loss was devastating—even causing a cheese curd shortage in Ontario!

🔥 But St-Albert rebuilt and expanded, proving that nothing can stop Canada’s top cheesemakers.

As the Mayor of The Nation, Ontario, put it at the time:
“It’s a page of history that’s been ripped out.”

Thankfully, the new facility is bigger, better, and cheesier than ever!

Will Palapa Tours Implement the Cheese Tax? 🧀🚤

We at Palapa Tours believe that cheese is a fundamental human right—but we’ve also heard whispers of a Cheese Tax being introduced on our floating tiki boats. We’re still debating it, but let’s be honest… if you bring a bag of St-Albert curds aboard, we may demand a handful as payment. 😆

  • The Ottawa Rowing Club

    The Ottawa Rowing Club

    A Hidden Waterfront Gem & a Dream Wedding Venue🚣♂️💍🌊

As you glide along the Ottawa River with Palapa Tours, you’ll pass by one of the city’s most historic and picturesque landmarks—the Ottawa Rowing Club (ORC). Nestled along the riverbank and hidden from view on the roads, this iconic institution has been shaping Ottawa’s waterfront culture for over 150 years.

Canada’s Oldest Rowing Club – A Legacy on the Water

Established in 1867—the same year as Canada’s Confederation—the Ottawa Rowing Club is Canada’s oldest continuous rowing club. Among its founding members? None other than Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald and the Governor General.

The club’s first regatta in 1867 was a major event:
“Throughout the afternoon, crowds of people lined the river banks to witness the sport, while the bosom of the river literally swarmed with all sorts of sailing craft, from the tiniest little shell up to the stateliest steamboat.”

From a boathouse built on pontoons that would often sink to becoming one of Canada’s largest and most respected rowing organizations, the ORC has overcome challenges and thrived for over a century.

A Thriving Hub for Rowing in Ottawa

Rowing is at the heart of the ORC, offering programs for all ages and skill levels:

✅ Youth Day Camps – Teaching kids the joy of rowing.
✅ Adult Learn to Row – Perfect for those starting out in the sport.
✅ Club & Recreational Rowing – For fitness, fun, and competition.
✅ Competitive Teams & Regattas – Including the Head of the Rideau Regatta, a 5.3 km race held every September.
✅ University Rowing Partnerships – Over 80 student-athletes from Carleton University & uOttawa train here.
✅ Adaptive Rowing – Inclusive programs for individuals with disabilities.

The ORC has also produced Olympians and Paralympians, including:
🏆 Andrew Todd – Paralympic Gold Medalist
🏆 Joshua King – Olympic spare
🏆 Numerous world-class rowers and champions

A Waterfront Wedding Venue Like No Other 💍🚤

Beyond its sporting legacy, the Ottawa Rowing Club is also home to one of Ottawa’s most unique wedding venues—the Andy Binda Boathouse.

✨ Why is it the perfect venue?
🏛️ Historic Charm – Celebrate in a century-old waterfront setting, surrounded by rowing history.
🌅 Breathtaking Views – Exchange vows with the Ottawa River as your backdrop.
🎉 Flexible & Affordable – Choose your own caterer and bar service to fit your style and budget.
🌿 Outdoor Deck Ceremony Space – A beautiful, open-air option for your vows.

🚤 A Wedding Toast Like No Other!
One of the most unique wedding traditions at the boathouse is the Palapa Tours Floating Tiki Bar toast! If a wedding is happening while we’re cruising by:
🔔 We ring the bell & toast the couple from the river!
🥃 If the ceremony has ended, the captain navigates to the dock & offers the newlyweds a celebratory shot—on the house!
📸 Photographers LOVE this magical, spontaneous moment!

🛶 Arrive in Style with the AquaTaxi.Solar!
For a dramatic entrance, the AquaTaxi.Solar can deliver the bride straight to the dock, where she walks up the ramp to say “I do.” A breathtaking way to start a new chapter!

Best Seen from the Water! 🚤🌊

Unlike many of Ottawa’s famous landmarks, the Ottawa Rowing Club is hidden from the road—but not from the river! That’s why a Palapa cruise is a great way to experience it.

As we pass by the heritage buildings, you’ll see rowers in action, training along the same stretch of river that has shaped champions for over a century.

Explore the Ottawa River with Palapa

Looking for a unique way to experience the Ottawa River this summer? 🚤☀️ Palapa Tours is making waves with our scenic boat tours departing from downtown Ottawa, and now, we’re adding an exciting new turnaround point: the NCC River House!

What is the NCC River House?

Nestled along the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway, the NCC River House is a stunning, revitalized century-old heritage building that has been transformed into a hub for recreation, events, and environmental education.

🏛️ A Historic Gem: Built between 1914 and 1925, it was originally home to the Ottawa New Edinburgh Club (ONEC) and has since become a federal heritage landmark thanks to its connection to canoeing history in Canada.

🌊 A Riverfront Escape: Today, the River House offers public access to the Ottawa River shoreline, making it the perfect place to swim, kayak, grab a bite to eat, or just enjoy the views from its scenic patio.

🌍 Sustainability & Conservation: With the Ottawa Riverkeeper Learning Lab on-site, the River House is more than just a pretty place—it’s also a key player in keeping the Ottawa River swimmable, drinkable, and fishable for generations to come!

Palapa Tours & the NCC River House: The Perfect Pairing!

🚤 AquaTaxi.Solar now stops at the NCC River House!

Some of our downtown tours will make a stop here before heading back to the city, offering guests a chance to see this historic site from the water.

  • Palapa Tours & BeaverTails

    Palapa Tours & BeaverTails

A Match Made in Canadian Heaven!

Picture this: You’re cruising down the Ottawa River, the warm breeze in your hair, the iconic sights of Parliament and the Rideau Canal gliding by. You’re on Ottawa Palapa Tours, a 12-guest floating tiki bar on the Ottawa River. But what could possibly make this already perfect day even better?

    🎉 BeaverTails. Yes, BeaverTails. 🎉

A Truly Canadian Combo: Boats & BeaverTails

Palapa Tours isn’t just about the ride—it’s about the full Canadian experience, and nothing screams Canada like a hot, crispy, cinnamon-sugar-covered BeaverTail. It’s the kind of snack that makes you feel like you’ve won the Stanley Cup of desserts—except you don’t have to be a hockey player to enjoy it.

For over 40 years, BeaverTails have been the must-have treat when visiting Ottawa. Whether it’s your first time trying one (prepare for your life to change) or you’re a seasoned expert on chocolate hazelnut vs. Killaloe Sunrise, we can all agree: no trip to the capital is complete without one.

A Bite of History (Because Canada Loves a Good Story)

BeaverTails started back in 1978 at a community fair in Killaloe, Ontario, where Grant and Pam Hooker introduced their German-Canadian family recipe to the world. Fast forward a few decades, and these delicious fried-dough pastries have become more Canadian than a moose in a Mountie uniform.

Even Barack Obama couldn’t resist the hype. During his first official visit to Canada in 2009, he stopped by the Byward Market and grabbed a BeaverTail. If it’s good enough for the Former Leader of the Free World, it’s good enough for you.

Palapa Tours + BeaverTails = The Ultimate Ottawa Day

    So here’s the game plan:
1️⃣ Hop on a Palapa Tour – Experience the Ottawa River like never before on our floating tiki boats.
2️⃣ Enjoy the Views – Parliament, the Chateau Laurier, the Rideau Falls… We’ve got front-row seats to the best sights in the city.
3️⃣ Devour a BeaverTail – Grab one before or after your ride and complete the perfectly Canadian day.
4️⃣ Brag on Instagram – Because let’s be real, your followers need to know you’re living your best life.

    Join Us This Summer!

At Palapa Tours, we believe in unforgettable experiences, and we’re pretty sure that floating on a tiki boat while enjoying the most legendary pastry in Canada is as good as it gets. Don’t miss out—book your tour and grab a BeaverTail today!

    📍 Where? Ottawa River
    ⏳ When? All summer long
🌊 Why? Because boats + BeaverTails = happiness
